Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Gilbert Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Genie-compatible cable and drum replacements across Gilbert, with installed pricing typically running $130 to $250 when the cables or drums are replaced on their own. Same-day service is available when we have the correct part on the truck, which covers most common Genie models. Most Gilbert homeowners discover this failure the same way: the door starts opening crooked, or one side drops an inch or two before the other catches up, and you can see a frayed cable or a bird’s nest of wire on the drum.

The cable-and-drum assembly is what keeps your Genie door level as it travels. The drum is the grooved wheel mounted above each end of the door; the cable wraps around it and lifts that corner. When one cable snaps or a drum loses its grooves, the door wants to twist in the track. You’ll usually see the problem before you hear it, and you’ll almost always hear it before you call us.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

This applies to virtually every Genie sectional garage door made in the last 25 years, but the part isn’t one-size-fits-all. Genie doors ship with drums sized to the door’s height, spring type, and cable length. Standard 7-foot doors use one measurement; 8-foot doors use another. If you have a 7’6″ or 8′ door in a Gilbert home with raised or vaulted ceilings, the drum diameter changes again, because the door must travel farther per spring turn to clear the opening.

Genie’s current garage doors also differ in whether they use a torsion system (spring on the bar above the door, cables winding onto drums at both ends) or an extension system (springs along the horizontal tracks, cables running through pulleys). The torsion setup is far more common in homes built in Gilbert after about 2000. You can identify what you have by looking above the closed door: if there’s a round spring mounted horizontally on a shaft with cables at both ends, that’s torsion. The Genie label on the inside edge of the door panel will list the model and serial number; bring that photo when you call, and we’ll match the correct drum to the inch.

On the OEM question: genuine Genie cables and drums are well-made, and for most models we’ll quote the Genie part unless the lead time is days out. Quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers like Guardian and Action Industries are available for most series, and in some cases they arrive the same day. We’ll tell you which you’re getting and what it costs, in writing, before we touch the door. Servo Garage Doors Gilbert is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Genie, and we also stock parts for LiftMaster and Chamberlain.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • Door opens unevenly or stops mid-travel. One cable has stretched or the drum has lost its grip on the cable, so one side of the door isn’t being lifted at the same rate. You’ll notice the bottom edge tilts as it moves.
  • Frayed or rusted cables. Look at the cables near the bottom bracket. In Gilbert, the dry air can make cables brittle over several years, particularly in garages that face west and catch the afternoon sun on the door. If you see individual wire strands poking out, replacement is overdue.
  • Loose cable or slack on one side. If a cable is sagging or has come completely off the drum, the door may still open but that cable isn’t doing its job. The remaining cable is now carrying uneven load, which accelerates failure.
  • Grinding or scraping from the drum area. A drum with flattened or chewed grooves makes noise as the cable tries to seat itself. That grinding is metal-on-metal wear, and it doesn’t correct itself.
  • Door suddenly slams or jerks when closing. A cable that snaps mid-operation releases tension on one side. The door can drop or lurch hard, which is a serious safety event. Stop using the door and call us immediately.

One note on safety: the cables on a torsion-spring Genie door are under significant tension even when the door is down. If a cable has snapped or come off the drum, do not attempt to re-seat it yourself. The spring that balances that cable can unwind suddenly, and the force involved can cause serious injury. This is one of the few garage door repairs where we tell every Gilbert caller the same thing: leave the door alone and wait for a trained technician.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Gilbert, installed Genie cable and drum replacement on its own runs $130 to $250. That range covers both cables and both drums when they’re replaced as a pair, which is standard practice, since a mismatched set will wear unevenly. If the torsion spring has also failed, you’re looking at $180 to $340 for a complete spring, cable, and drum job, because the spring must be unwound and reset to zero before any cable work can be done.

Every quote we write is a flat price, on paper, before any work begins. That’s Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, and it’s non-negotiable. The price includes the parts, the labor, and the full setup and balancing of the door when we’re done. You don’t get an estimate and then a surprise on the invoice. You get a written scope and a written dollar figure, and that’s what you pay.

After the job, you’ll receive a documented photo record showing the failed cables and drums we removed, and the new ones installed. Clause 4 of The Haven Standard is why that photo record exists: the technician photographs the failed part before quoting a replacement. It’s evidence, not a story. The work is also covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right.

What an owner can safely do is look. Open the door manually with the opener disengaged, watch it travel, and photograph what you see. Read the Genie model label and note it. Check whether the cables look frayed or the drums look scored. That information helps us arrive with the right parts.

What you shouldn’t do is attempt the fix. The spring and cable system carries the entire weight of a 150-to-250-pound door, and the spring torque involved in a torsion system is measured in hundreds of pounds per square inch. Re-seating a cable or swapping a drum requires unwinding and rewinding that spring in a precise sequence with the right winding bars. One slip, and the bar becomes a projectile. Marcus Deller has been doing this work for the better part of two decades, and he’ll tell you the same thing: some jobs aren’t worth finding out the hard way. Call (520) 482-3838 and we’ll sort it out. The phone line is answered by a person, 24/7, and we’ll send the right technician with the right parts.
